A group of students are giving thousands of dollars of their own money to charity. Students from North Lakeland Elementary School recently carried 28 sacks weighting 30 to 40 pounds to a special cart. Each bag was filled with pennies that the children painstakingly collected on their own time.  

Indiana Attorney General Greg Zoeller has kicked off an effort to raise private money to help feed the needy. The Indiana General Assembly in June dedicated $300,000 this year to Feeding Indiana's Hungry Inc. The organization, also known as FIsH, is the umbrella organization for 10 regional food banks. Zoeller on Saturday announced he wants to raise private money to match the public support.  

He says money given to Feed the Children may be used for lawyers. OKLAHOMA CITY — The fired president of Feed The Children said Friday that donors should not give to the charity until "all of this mess is cleaned up." The charity's board of directors fired Larry Jones, 69, on Nov. 6.

The United Way of Eagle County has worked with over 30 Vail Valley charities for more than a decade and has raised close to $1.3 million during that time. While most people think of United Way as a national or international organization, the United Way of Eagle County makes it its mission to keep the funds it raises local — all of the money raised in Eagle County stays in Eagle County. One single donation to the United Way is a powerful way to reach many in our valley.  

It's hard to believe, but the Christmas Season is quickly approaching and soon will be upon us. Once again, the Mesquite Police Officer's Association (MPOA) will be sponsoring the "Shop with a Cop" event. This annual event will be held on Thursday, Dec. 17.  

The Run for Children 2009 will take place in Hanoi this Sunday to raise funds to treat poor children with cancer and heart diseases. The event, jointly organized by the Embassy of Canada, the Hanoi Union of Friendship Organizations, the Vietnam-Canada Friendship Association and the Canadian Chamber of Commerce in Vietnam, is the new name for the annual 'Terry Fox Run' which has been successfully held in Vietnam's capital every year since 2000. Yolo Community Foundation hosted the Yolo County Philanthropy Day Awards reception recently at the Erwin Meier Administration building in Woodland. More than 80 people attended. The annual awards recognize the impact philanthropy has on Yolo County and the role individuals, who donate their money and time, play in enriching their community.
